Your tourist guide for Goolwa provides you with the essential travel resources to plan your holiday!
Historic, soulful and beautifully wild, Goolwa is a coastal‑river town where Australia’s greatest waterway finally greets the Southern Ocean. Set on the shores of Lake Alexandrina, just over an hour’s scenic drive from Adelaide, Goolwa blends rich heritage with breathtaking natural landscapes, world‑class water experiences and a relaxed, welcoming charm that keeps travellers returning year after year.
Its name, derived from an Aboriginal word meaning “elbow,” reflects the sweeping curve of the river as it bends toward the sea—a fitting symbol for a place shaped by water, culture and connection.
Goolwa is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. With both fresh and saltwater environments at its doorstep, the town offers an unrivalled range of aquatic adventures. From kayaking across glassy lakes to sailing, paddleboarding, jet‑skiing or cruising the river on a classic wooden boat, every kind of water sport finds a home here. And if you don’t have your own vessel, boat hire is readily available.
Just across the bridge lies Hindmarsh Island, gateway to the internationally significant Coorong wetlands—a vast, untouched stretch of lagoons, dunes and birdlife that feels worlds away from the everyday. This is a place to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature.
For anglers, Goolwa is legendary. The nearby Murray Mouth is renowned for mulloway fishing, while surf fishing along Goolwa Beach rewards patient fishers with salmon, mullet and the occasional surprise catch. Whether you’re casting from the sand or drifting on the lake, the region is a true fisherman’s haven.
And when the day winds down, the Fleurieu Peninsula’s award‑winning wineries are close at hand, offering the perfect way to toast a day well spent.
Goolwa’s story is woven into the fabric of South Australia’s early development. Surveyed in 1840, it became the state’s first major river port with the arrival of paddle steamers in 1853. Produce from deep inland was transported down the Murray River to Goolwa, where it was loaded onto ships bound for the world.
When silting made the Murray Mouth impassable for larger vessels, Goolwa adapted—opening South Australia’s first railway line in 1854, linking the town to Port Elliot. Although river trade eventually declined, Goolwa’s historic buildings, wharf precinct and preserved paddle steamers remain as proud reminders of its pioneering past.
Today, the town’s heritage enriches every visit, adding depth and character to its modern coastal lifestyle.
Goolwa is an easy 80‑minute drive from Adelaide, following a picturesque route through rolling farmland and the charming towns of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Travellers can also reach Goolwa via regional bus services or by private tour operators offering day trips from the city.
Goolwa is a year‑round destination.
From boutique B&Bs to riverside holiday homes and family‑friendly accommodation, Goolwa offers plenty of places to unwind. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or an adventure‑filled getaway, this fast‑growing coastal town welcomes you with open arms.
