Coulta: Where Untamed Coastline Meets Quiet Country Charm
Coulta is the kind of place travellers whisper about long after they’ve left—a small, welcoming country community nestled at the foot of the dramatic Marble Range on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Surrounded by rolling sheep paddocks, golden cereal fields and rugged granite outcrops, it’s a destination that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the land.
What makes Coulta unforgettable is the contrast: peaceful rural life on one side, and on the other, some of the most spectacular, untouched coastline in the state. Within minutes, you can swap wide‑open farmland for pristine beaches, soaring cliffs and the kind of ocean views that stop you in your tracks.
Just a short drive from town lie three of Eyre Peninsula’s most beautiful beaches—Coles, Greenly and Convention Beach. Each offers its own flavour of coastal magic:
Nearby, Lake Greenly, a vast shimmering salt lake at the foot of Mount Greenly, adds another layer of natural beauty. The area is popular with hang‑gliding enthusiasts who launch themselves from the slopes to soar over the landscape—an unforgettable sight for visitors on the ground.
About 35 kilometres north of Coulta, the highway between Mount Hope and Sheringa runs tantalisingly close to some of the most dramatic coastline on the Eyre Peninsula. It’s a drive that rewards every glance out the window.
One of the region’s true highlights is Cummings Monument Lookout, located 60 kilometres south of Elliston. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views stretching from Point Drummond in the south to the rugged Sheringa cliffs in the north. The lookout is also home to a resident family of osprey, who nest on a craggy pinnacle beside the viewing area—an extraordinary wildlife encounter for patient observers.
With a well‑maintained access road, ample parking and space for caravans, Cummings Monument is an easy and rewarding stop for anyone travelling the Flinders Highway between Port Lincoln and Ceduna.
Coulta sits along the Flinders Highway on South Australia’s west coast.
The drive itself is part of the experience—open skies, rolling farmland and glimpses of the ocean make the journey feel like a preview of what’s to come.
Coulta is a year‑round destination, but each season offers something special:
Coulta is more than a stopover—it’s a place where the land feels alive, the coastline feels endless and the pace of life slows just enough for you to breathe it all in. Whether you’re chasing adventure, craving tranquillity or simply exploring the Eyre Peninsula’s hidden gems, Coulta offers a rare blend of authenticity and natural beauty that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
