Your tourist guide for K’Gari – Fraser Island provides you with the essential travel resources to plan your holiday!
Just off the coast of Queensland’s Hervey Bay lies one of Australia’s most extraordinary natural treasures: K’gari (Fraser Island)—a World Heritage–listed wonder and the largest sand island on Earth. Stretching more than 120 kilometres in length and over 30 kilometres at its widest point, this ancient landscape has been sculpted over 800,000 years, creating a place where rainforest grows from sand, freshwater lakes glow turquoise, and wildlife thrives in pristine, untouched habitats.
K’gari means “paradise” in the language of the Butchulla people, who lived on the island for more than 5,500 years. Their deep connection to Country is still visible today in archaeological sites, midden heaps, ceremonial bora rings, and stone artefacts scattered across the island. European history later added its own stories, from Captain James Cook’s charting of the coastline to the dramatic shipwreck of Eliza Fraser, whose name the island carried for generations.
Today, K’gari remains a place of wonder—raw, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful.
K’gari is a living gallery of natural marvels, each more captivating than the last.
From sweeping beaches to ancient dunes and lush rainforest, K’gari is a destination that feels both otherworldly and deeply grounding.
K’gari is home to an impressive array of wildlife. Bird lovers can spot dozens of species, from sea eagles to kingfishers. Its warm coastal waters attract dugongs, dolphins, and turtles, while the western side of the island becomes a marine highway for humpback whales and their calves between August and November—one of the world’s most intimate whale‑watching experiences.
