Your tourist guide for Grassy Head provides you with the essential travel resources to plan your holiday!
Tucked between the laid‑back villages of Stuarts Point to the south and Scotts Head to the north, Grassy Head is one of those rare Australian beach escapes that still feels wonderfully untouched. Set along Tourist Drive 14, this serene pocket of coastline blends ancient landscapes, rich local history and a deep sense of calm that travellers instantly fall in love with.
What makes Grassy Head special is its simplicity: towering forests that meet the sea, long stretches of golden sand, and a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature.
Grassy Head is framed by lush coastal rainforest and the rhythmic sound of the Pacific Ocean. The beach here feels expansive and wild, with rolling dunes and sweeping views that shift beautifully with the light. It’s the kind of place where early mornings mean soft pink horizons and the scent of salt carried on a gentle breeze.
Just behind the shoreline, the Grassy Head Holiday Park offers a relaxed base for travellers, with caravan sites and holiday rentals that place you only steps from the sand. Wake to birdsong, wander to the beach with a coffee in hand, and let the day unfold at its own pace.
Grassy Head holds a unique chapter in the history of the Macleay River. Long before the river met the sea at South West Rocks, its mouth once opened right here at Grassy Head. That changed dramatically in the late 1800s when a major flood redirected the river’s flow southward.
To stabilise the new course, an entrance was constructed at South West Rocks—shaping the coastline as we know it today. Visitors can still see the remnants of the river’s original mouth from a scenic lookout near the holiday park. It’s a quiet, contemplative spot where you can gaze across the landscape and imagine how the coastline once looked.
Grassy Head is easily reached via Tourist Drive 14, a scenic coastal route that winds through charming seaside villages and natural landscapes.
The drive itself is part of the experience—quiet roads, ocean glimpses and the feeling of leaving the busy world behind.
Grassy Head is beautiful year‑round, but each season offers something different:
It’s peaceful. It’s scenic. It’s authentic. Grassy Head is the kind of destination that rewards those who seek out the quieter corners of the coast—places where nature still feels raw and inviting, and where the pace of life slows just enough for you to truly unwind.
If you’re dreaming of a premium yet understated coastal escape, Grassy Head offers the perfect blend of beauty, history and tranquillity.
