Double demerits come into effect this October long weekend

Motorists are being reminded to behave responsibly, as double demerits will be implemented ahead of the October long weekend.

Millions of Australians across four states and territories are set to travel during the extended three-day weekend to celebrate Labour Day or the King’s Birthday this Monday.

Police have issued a warning to drivers that officers will be deployed in large numbers to ensure the safety of road users and have encouraged the public to report any motorists engaging in hazardous driving.

In the twelve months up to August, Australia experienced 1353 road deaths, which is 4.3 percent higher than the same period last year.

Operation Labour Day 2025 will commence in NSW and the ACT at 12.01am on Friday, with double demerits enforced until 11.59pm on Monday.

Traffic and Highway Patrol, along with specialist police and general officers, will focus on addressing drink and drug driving, fatigue, mobile phone usage, speeding, and violations related to seat belts and helmets throughout the state.
