A Charming Heritage Village in the Heart of the Fraser Coast
Tucked away in the peaceful hinterland of Hervey Bay, the historical village of Howard offers a refreshing blend of country charm, rich heritage, and easy access to some of Queensland’s most beloved coastal destinations. With its leafy streets, warm community spirit, and fascinating past shaped by coal mining and agriculture, Howard is the kind of place where time slows down just enough for you to savour every moment.
Perfectly positioned for day trips and scenic drives, Howard sits just 15 minutes from Maryborough, 25 minutes from Hervey Bay, and a short 20‑minute journey to the tranquil beaches of Toogoom and Burrum Heads. Whether you’re exploring the Fraser Coast or seeking a quiet escape, Howard welcomes you with open arms.
Howard’s heritage is proudly preserved in its beautifully maintained buildings and local attractions. One of the village’s highlights is a meticulously restored Queenslander, where visitors can step back in time through guided tours that bring the region’s early settler stories to life. After exploring, indulge in a traditional Devonshire Tea served on the verandah—fresh scones, local preserves, and country hospitality at its finest.
The Howard Museum, though small in size, is rich in character. Its exhibits trace the area’s coal mining roots, early farming life, and the contributions of local servicemen and women. War memorabilia, historical photographs, and community artefacts offer a heartfelt glimpse into the village’s past.
Howard’s relaxed rural atmosphere is best experienced at the Steley Street Country Markets, held on the first Saturday of every month. Wander through stalls brimming with handmade crafts, fresh produce, plants, baked goods, and unique treasures. It’s a lively gathering where locals and visitors mingle, musicians often play, and the scent of sizzling market food fills the air.
Just beyond the village, the Burrum River winds its way through the landscape, offering peaceful spots for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. Cast a line for bream or flathead, cool off in the calm waters, or simply enjoy a riverside picnic surrounded by nature.
Howard is conveniently connected by both road and rail, making it an easy stop on any Fraser Coast itinerary.
Howard enjoys a warm, subtropical climate year‑round.
