Western Sydney Airport welcomes its first international arrival

Western Sydney Airport has officially entered a new era of global connectivity, welcoming its first international arrival on Monday morning. The milestone moment came as Air New Zealand flight NZ165 from Auckland touched down just before 7.45am, marking the beginning of international operations at Australia’s newest major airport.

The aircraft arrived 18 minutes ahead of schedule, and in a sign of the airport’s modern design and streamlined processing systems, some passengers cleared customs and exited the terminal in just 17 minutes. The rapid turnaround was made possible by Western Sydney Airport’s fully digital arrivals and declaration system, replacing traditional paper-based forms with faster, automated processing.

The same Air New Zealand aircraft will also make history again later today, becoming the first international departure from Western Sydney Airport when it returns to Auckland.

A New Gateway for Western Sydney

Air New Zealand is among the first major carriers to commit to regular international services at Western Sydney Airport, signalling confidence in the region’s long-term growth and strategic importance. The arrival of NZ165 marks the beginning of what airport leaders describe as a transformational period for Western Sydney and the broader national aviation network.

WSI Chief Executive Simon Hickey said the launch of international flights represents “an unprecedented new era of connectivity for the people of Western Sydney.”

“With 24-hour operations, Western Sydney Airport gives airlines greater flexibility to connect into global hubs and travellers more choice in how they reach the world,” Mr Hickey said.

He highlighted the region’s diverse and rapidly expanding population — home to 2.5 million residents and more than 170 cultural backgrounds — as a major driver of demand for international travel.

“Western Sydney is one of Australia’s largest and fastest-growing economies. The region represents a substantial new market for international airlines, and today’s arrival is just the beginning.”

A Terminal Built for Speed and Simplicity

One of the standout features of Western Sydney Airport is its next-generation terminal, designed to deliver a “seamless and stress-free airport experience.” Digital processing, intuitive passenger flow and advanced security systems aim to reduce wait times and improve overall efficiency.

“This is something we’ve been building up to,” Mr Hickey said. “We’re starting small and continuing to build. In just over a year, Western Sydney Airport will offer connections to 250 destinations worldwide.”

At full operational capacity, the airport is expected to handle up to 10 million passengers annually by the mid‑2030s — a scale comparable to Adelaide Airport today, with significant room for expansion.

“This airport is built for the next century,” Mr Hickey added. “We’re ready to grow with the demand across Sydney and Australia.”

Industry Leaders Welcome the Boost

Tourism Australia Tourism & Media CEO Vincent Borg said the opening of Western Sydney Airport marks one of the most significant developments in Australia’s tourism landscape in decades.

“The launch of Australia’s second major airport will unlock enormous economic growth, create new tourism pathways and dramatically improve turnaround times for travellers,” Mr Borg said.

“Western Sydney Airport will not only ease pressure on existing aviation infrastructure — it will open the door to new international markets, support local tourism operators and make Australia more accessible than ever before.”

Domestic Flights Also Underway

The first domestic Jetstar flights began operating on Sunday, coinciding with the official opening of Western Sydney Airport. More domestic services are scheduled throughout the week as airlines ramp up operations.

With both domestic and international flights now in motion, Western Sydney Airport has officially taken its place as a major gateway for travellers, businesses and tourism operators across Australia.
